Homeowner Hell

The road to the kitchen of our dreams. This is the diary of a major renovation, out of control before it began, of the home of two adults with full-time jobs, two young children, two elderly and decrepit dogs, and a cranky cat.

A Million Dollars

A Million Dollars. That is what we have given our kitchen designer. Yes, it's true. It's officially In The Works.

We put a deposit down only to find that the drawers in the quote weren't exactly what we want, so we have changed that. So now, we wait. The builder came tonight, to go over things one more time. He is going to provide us with a detailed quote early next week. At present, we are expecting that the cabinets will be ready mid to late January. The builder is busy then, so we might just leave everything for mid to late February, rather than live in (more) chaos for longer.

So the builder says 2 weeks. The cabinet installers say 1 week. Then another 2 weeks for the granite countertop. If we do the math, it turns out to be 5 weeks. So that is the official prediction. 5 weeks.

My prediction is 8 weeks. And for that, they will rip out all the old stuff, fix holes and generally buff out all the rough spots, and install everything, from plumbing to light fixtures to outlets and ductwork. They prime, we paint. They patch gaping holes in the floor where walls and things used to be, we live with it until we get new hardwood, which will probably be about the same time the Final Sale agreement on the house is signed, since we never want to see the place again.

But I am absolutely certain it will be worth it. Really. Certain. Absolutely.
